Day two. Murtoa to Underbool 3.6.26

We all seemed to fare fairly well last night – no one complaining of cold or lack of sleep. Up and about for breaky in the camp kitchen and then packed up, took a walk around Lake Marma and headed for the Stick Shed.

The Stick Shed was an amazing feat of Bush engineering back in the First World War years. A huge shed was built of sticks and corrugated iron and concrete floor to store grain. It was built in four months which is bloody amazing when you see what they had to do. I will let the pictures tell the story and you can Google pretty much everything else. It was in use until 1980s and then left in disarray before being restored for four years and opened to public in 2013.

Fuel for me, a quick drive-by silo art and a sandwich for lunch at Chrissie’s cafe.

Quick stop into Rupanyup to look at the silo art there before heading off again.

It rained on and off throughout the day but in between the sunshine and the temperature hovered I guess around 10 and below. It did get a little warmer later on.
Sheep Hills silo was the next stop, followed by Brim silo art.
Then a new one since our trip in 2021 at Walpeup, painted in 2024.

A short trip to our destination at the Underbool Rec Reserve where it’s an honesty system. I chose powered option to run the heater. Nowhere to eat out here so we are doing easy meals. For Mary, Phil and I – reheated pizza for entree and stir through pasta. Meg and Stef also had pizza and soup. Mary and Col homemade tomato soup with Kalamata bread.

Rain started spitting just as we were about to eat, so we packed up and finished up in vans and tents. Did the dishes. 

It was only fleeting rain and we later retired to the verandah of the recreation reserve to play a fun game of Five Crowns – a new game to some and very good fun if a little cold. 

Showers for some and ready for bed a bit later tonight.
