Way out West 2025.

20th of July.  Day three – Orreroo to Muloorina Station Campground SA.

After wake up and breaky with some stunning Ring neck Parrots? and pack up we headed off at 9:15ish across the road to have a look at Pekina Reservoir, then Pekina Run Ruins.

Fuelled up at Carrieton. A lovely community owned store and fuel stop. Cool murals and a flock of sulphur crested cockies squawking overhead.

Tyres pumped up and sorted. Ready to roll at 10:45.

Beautiful scenery as we hit the south end of the Flinders Ranges. A beautiful wedge tailed eagle feasting on roadkill and taking off majestically in the mid morning light. (No pics as driving)

Lunch at Copley Bakery (scene of my first and only positive COVID test returning from the BiG Red Bash a few years ago)

We popped into Farina – an old Ghan Railway town that was left to ruin when the train ceased. In recent years the ruins and township has been being resurrected by volunteers who come out and work. Key to the success is the old underground bakery has been restored and bakes daily during the short season.

Turns out today is the last day of the season and whilst we’ve called in to grab some of their delicious baked goods, we were out of luck, the shelves were bare.

They were a group of motorcyclists who might have also cleaned the place out.

So we left with no cookies and took where do you just took off from through the township back to the highway via the restored train.

Back on the road saw more big wedgies on roadkill.

Another beautiful day today the sun is shining temperature of around 19 or 20. I wish I had put a T-shirt on this morning.

We arrived into Marree – checked to see if there was any chance of a flight over Lake Eyre -no, all booked for several days. We weren’t surprised- it would be dumb luck to have a cancellation or something.

We asked the young fella if the access road to Lake Eyre from Muloorina is open. Yes it is.

Some of what we love. I know many of you readers can’t believe we love doing this.

We headed through Marree to Muloorina Station campground to set up for the night and head out to Level Post Bay and Madigan’s Bay tomorrow.

In looking for a campsite, I managed to get stuck in the soft sand. Needed to air down the tyres and backed out.

We found a lovely spot and set up for the night. I set up properly and dropped the Tvan tent (not just the quick set up canvas back)

We lit a fire, the fellas phaffed with an electrical issue in Phil’s electric brakes and battery set up.

Mary and I started tea and we had a relaxing evening in front of the fire, under an ink black sky studded with sparkling stars. We spotted a few satellites and I saw a ripper falling star. No one else did so it remains unconfirmed!

Dishes done.

Liqueur Topaque and mint Kit Kat around the fire.

This is what it is all about. Camping in the outback.

Then it was time for bed again. Hot water bottles and I’m trying the Aldi heated rug tonight. I was so warm and toasty last night I’m not sure I need the extra.
