Madi’s Manoeuvres. Marree to Muloorina Station Day 5 – 5 June 2024.

Had an amazingly better sleep last night. Awoke about 6:30 and stuck my head out to see the view and very happy to see sunrise colours and the moon through the cars.

We are just sitting and waiting to see what’s happening with the roads. We’ve heard that a decision will be made later in the day. There are people camped all around Marree waiting for the word that roads are passable again.

A relaxed cuppa tea or two, breaky and chat. Mary and I walked over to taste the drinking water at a new water station. 2$ for 5 litres, 4$ for 20. It tastes ok so will fill our empty containers.

A walk around Marree to check out the sights and a. Coffee from the general store. Mary ran into some friends from Melb as you do.

We packed up and cooked some hot dogs for lunch in fresh rolls from Farina Underground Bakery.

We all topped up with water and headed out the Oodnadatta Track about a km before turning off to Muloorina Station. Hard to believe the tracks were closed due to the rain. We had dust!!! With a few wet patches here and there.

Unfortunately, the road to Lake Eyre – Half Post Bay is closed as they had 20mm out there and not tomorrow either. So we set up camp on the station camping area and hunted up enough wood for a roast.

The fire was started to develop the coals for the camp ovens. Camp set up and then the meat and veg prepped ready to go.

The flies are here in their numbers do flynets are out. The sticky buggers like buzzing around the ears.

Mary and I went for a second wood hunt right on sunset. Once again the colours both west and east are stunning.

Roasts were sizzling by the fire – lamb and beef with spuds, pumpkin, carrots and onion with gravy. Heaps of food in four camp ovens.

Then the clean up and dishes. Not a big deal with many hands making light work.

The sky tonight is wall to wall stars. No moon and the Milky Way stretching from horizon to horizon.

Not so cold tonight. Into bed about 10:45 to finalise the writing of the blog.
