Ushuaia to El Calafate – 5 April

Rain pattering in the window raised me from my slumber in the wee hours. The room is super warm so we opened windows as wide as we could for some cool air. The wall heater would not turn off. (Handy to dry the socks and jocks but phew!!!)

Still raining at get up time – we have been so lucky to dodge weather so far this trip.

Downstairs waiting for breakfast to start at 7. We are due for our transfer to airport at 8.15.

Our care factor is now a whole lot less about our luggage weight after a late night. As Steve anticipated he did go over and happily paid the approx $20 for extra kilos. Some of the rest of us went close but got away with it.

We ran into several of our new best Sylvia Earle friends Adelle, Steve (my Rock Paper Scissors nemesis) and Lesley, and Marilyn was there too.

Onto the plane and we were all seated separately. The take off was fine then we hit some turbulence and it lasted for a quite a while, probably the roughest I’ve experienced. The woman sitting beside me was quite stressed.

El Calafate was different than we anticipated. Located on the Patagonian Steppe – quite dry. The mountains are located in the surrounding area. El Calafate sits on the edge of Lake Argentina.

Our hotel, Design Suites – El Calafate is 4kms out of town overlooking the Lake, with views of the Mountains. It is interesting in Design – but the workmanship could be better. It’s hot! We decided we would have an easy arvo and catch our breath. Checked in but had to wait till 3 for our rooms. We had some lunch and sat around enjoying the view and making some plans.

They have a taxi service into town – in at 6 and back at 10, so we went in and checked out the joint. Very much a tourist town and kick off point for many many tours. Lots and lots of food and drink venues too.

The fellas picked the restaurant – Pietro’s – which was good. We went to supermarket for some water, which was an experience using self serve.

Taxi home and almost ready for bed when I noticed the full moon and went out to try and photograph.

Getting our laundry done do we needed to organise that ready to take down at breaky.

    • Hi Bron. We have set up a ‘Kitty’ debit card using one of my cards so we do as much as possible on that. We are using Pesos and have withdrawn some cash for small items or where there is no card option.
