Awoke early to a little colour on the clouds, so I grabbed the camera and went upstairs. Well worth the effort, plenty of birds and a pretty good sunrise too.
I returned to cabin for a shower and grabbed the zoom lens to chase some bird shots.
There were big flocks of birds flying or gliding around the ship so I gave it a go. There were several Wandering Albatross- which are much larger than other birds. They were magnificent to watch, a bit harder to photograph. At one point there were a pair of Wanderers out in the distance mirrroring each other in flight, they also lit up in the sunlight at a certain angle – totally majestic. They just glide on the wind with no flap of wings.
Ship Virtual Tour.
Capt. Artem
A look at the ships operations via photos and presentations from
capt and Chief Eng. Ruslan.
Lots of facts and figures about engines and stabilisation and dashboard/consul etc.
Also a brief look at Galley etc. Osman was seasick so Capt. Artem gave us a bit of an overview of the logistics of the food etc.
All in all very interesting in broad Russian accents.
Throughout the day people could be seen hunting down their competitors in the Sylvia Earle Rock, Paper, Scissors challenge. Great fun and forced some who hadn’t been too social to engage with each other.

Up
Next up was Jonathan talking about his ‘Shaggy Dog story which was the story of the removal of the last sled dogs from the Australian Antarctic Division. There has been an international decision to remove introduced species and there was talk of euthanising the dogs until they were convinced to take them to an educational establishment in Minnesota. Jonathan was part of the expedition to remove and document it for a film “The last Husky”
There were other lectures too as you can see in the daily planner. I was slack on notes and maybe looking down to write was not a good idea.
