Big waves today but we have turned West into them. I have some videos which I hope captures the movement of ship. (Just haven’t worked out how to upload them to blog)
Another sea day.
Leo lecture today ‘Mummified crabeater seals on the Antarctic Peninsula’ quite interesting that these seals are stranding in high dry places and dying of either starvation or brain damage from jumping off high cliffs. Leo and team carried out autopsies and he described how hard that was as the seal skin is thin and hard, (and frozen) it was really hard to cut. He described using power tools and that just meant rotten skin, flesh etc melting and flying all over the place and stinking.

I’ve been out on deck a couple of times to watch the rough seas. After lunch most doors to outside were not able to be opened due to bad weather. Our balcony is still ok. Not as cold, but wet and windy.

Our pm lecture is ‘Six months on South Georgia’ by Dee Mitchell, South Georgia Heritage Trust. We picked Dee up two nights ago. Someone had to go into Gritvykken to do our Sth Georgia visit paperwork and they collected Dee as we are giving her a lift back to the Falklands.

The Heritage Trust runs a Museum and several other projects including the huge rat eradicated program.
Dee ran the museum for 6months. She has been before with a cumulative 2 years on the island.
We then watched a French Documentary titled “Ice in the Sky”- fabulous story of the pioneering French glaciologist Claude Lorius.

Sebastian Modak, one of the passengers and a freelance travel journalist presented ‘52 places in 52 weeks’. NY times traveller challenge/job. The NY times seeks a person to take of the challenge of visiting the selected 52 places in 52 days. Seb was selected from some 12000 applicants. A good story. A few messages – meet and talk to locals, take a chance.
At dinner tonight as the ship ducked and weaved through waves we could see the 1/2 moon quite brightly bouncing around in the sky. There were stars to be seen from the balcony which is the first we’ve seen for a while. Between that and a pink sunset, hopefully we are in for a good days sailing for tomorrow’s Sea day.
