Sea day. But still lots going on – 25 March.

Dark room, great sleep. Up and breaky followed by a lecture at 9 by Stephi – Is that even an iceberg?

Sea ice is counted in tenths.

Sea ice can grow up to 4kms a day.

Sea ice is at an all time low. Called a floe or a pan.

Land ice = icebergs

Is this a glacier?

Piedmont glacier or ice fringe we see lots of.

It takes 20 metres of snow to start or compress to ice. 30 minutes lower down as the ice is drier.

Land ice moves downhill.

Why ice is blue? It’s about distance light has to travel through ice. Hence in cracks and crevasses it looks blue.

From calving icebergs are formed.

We see 1/5 to 1/8 above the surface.

The bit under sea is the foot.

Clear ice has had all the air pushed out of it. Glacial ice is clear old ice. Could be 1000s of years old. On Peninsula it could be 100 000 years old.

Texture is created under water is like dimples/scalloped.

Waterlines tell a story of the iceberg. The foot is constantly eroeded, which causes a Change in equilibrium and weighting.

Bubble lines are created by the escaping ancient air.

To be named, icebergs calved from Ice shelves have to 10 nautical miles in size. B15 is 340kms long.

Always lots to learn.

Ice cliffs are just a way to describe that connected to land.

The E Team have so much information and knowledge to share. They do a fantastic job of keeping us informed and building our knowledge of what we have seen and why it is so.

Next task is our mandatory bio-security briefing and check/clean of our outdoor clothing in preparation for landing at Sth Georgia. Video: A visitors guide to Sth Georgia narrated by David Attenborough.

Massive populations of Fur Seals, King and Macaroni Penguins, elephant seals, albatrosses call Sth Georgia home. The greatest concentration of mammals and seabirds on the planet.

Maintain distance from wildlife.

No kneeling or touching stuff.

All outdoor gear checked and vacuumed ready for shore landings.

Daniel Beltra, one of the passengers presented a lecture. “Man’s Impact on the Planet – 30 years photographing Climate Change” Spanish and working with Greenpeace for many years.

He has won prizes and big exhibitions. Pretty amazing really.

It really is a nothing day today. The fog hasn’t lifted, we’ve been reviewing our thousands of photos and eaten at every turn.

Cocktails and canapés precedes the Recap/Precap.

HOWARD

We will approach Sth Georgia tonight.

8.00 tomorrow to Gold Harvout.

6.30 breaky.

Travel light.

On board again by 11.30

Move to St Andrew’s – big king penguin rookery.

Then he calls on the captain to deliver the bad news. We only have tomorrow at Sth Georgia. There are winds and waves coming that will average 11metres and we have to literally do Sth Georgia landings early tomorrow to make a run north and then west to get to the Falklands for some better conditions. As it is we will probably encounter similar 5-6 metre waves that we did across the Drake and Bransfield Strait earlier.

Windy – storms in our path. Eek!!!

Fireside chat at 9:15. Another passenger- Emma Carey. Recounting her personal story of falling from the sky – a skydiving accident at age 20. Had her 30th birthday yesterday. Authored a book “The girl who fell from the Sky” Emma Carey.

“If you can, you must”

What incredible and inspirational life story.

Okay, blinds closed to avoid bird strike closer to Sth Georgia.
